Engineers Week 2019

We celebrated Engineers week 2019 by visiting the Rediscovery Centre in Ballymun. We learned lots about engineering and got to challenge ourselves with STEM activities. Lots of pupils expressed interest in becoming engineers later in life!

The Book of Kells

On Tuesday 16th of October the girls from Ms. Caffrey’s 5th class travelled by bus to the city centre to see the wonder that is the Book of Kells. We experienced the beauty of the book seeing two volumes of the book that was on display. One of them was filled with pictures and the other the neatest handwriting we’ve ever seen. Our tour guide Sinéad told us all about the Monks and how they came to live in Ireland from the island of Iona. Sinéad showed us the materials they used to create the book including quills, the ink and the special paper used called vellum. We were also lucky enough to get to see the fabulous ‘Old Library’ in Trinity College where the Brian Boru harp is stored. We really enjoyed the facts and stories that Sinéad shared with us.

Tree Day in the National Botanic Gardens

On Thursday the 4th of October 2018 the three 2nd classes travelled by bus to the National Botanic Gardens for Tree Day.

We were brought around by two tour guides and had so much fun! Michelle brought us to see an elm tree and the children’s garden where we created leaf and bark rubbings. We learned about the rings of the tree, and did a quiz based on seeds. Ms. Mc Mullen and Ms. McGrane were given an apple each that had been grown in the garden. They were delicious!

We visited the wild Ireland section of the gardens and saw some oak trees and a hawthorn tree where Michelle told us tales of how the fairies granted wishes to those who tied ribbons onto the tree. We collected leaves and also saw some squirrels collecting food for hibernation.
